KOLEJ TALK (ACAH MACAM STILL BUDAK U :P)

Dengar cerita baru ni, banyak fakulti dengan kolej dekat UPM yang akan digabungkan. (Heck even universities are merged now, hi UNISZA and UMT)

I don't know what's the motive, but having working for 5 years now I think it's all about budgeting.
Bila gabung-gabung kolej dengan fakulti, instead of memecahkan budget kepada 2 pusat tanggungjawab (is this the correct term henlo gomen servant help me out), budget akan di-allocate kepada satu PTJ saja so on paper it sounds easier to manage.

However, in terms of logistics and cultural impact, that would be another story. Each college in UPM has their own gated community, so imagine bila dah gabung 2 kolej jadi satu, ada meeting, kena berjalan keluar dari pagar pergi kolej sebelah. Bukan saja meeting, any perjumpaan, ada barang nak ambil ke, ada discussion ke. Nak angkut barang, nak pindah perabot, nak mendaftar.

And it would be troublesome for the management as well, nak kena bahagi perhatian kepada 2. It's not an issue kalau kolej tu memang originally sebelah2 dalam satu Gate, macam kolej serumpun. Tapi kolej2 tradisional lain Gate jauh ya walaupun sebelah2 tapi sebab aliran trafik kena pusing jauh baru sampai. Case in point, nak ke KTP dari KPZ naik kereta dekat je sebab one way, tapi dari KTP ke KPZ kena pusing satu food court baru sampai.

Setiap kolej dekat UPM is unique, they have grown independent both geographically and administratively of each other for so long they have developed their own different camaraderie, idiosyncrasies, brotherhood(or basically culture lah). Setiap kolej ada identiti dan sejarah sendiri, logo, even lagu masing-masing, and to extreme cases, their own lingo. Kalau gabung kolej banyak lah unsur-unsur cultural ni akan tenggelam dan lupus. Takkan satu kolej ada dua lagu ye dok, mestilaa dia pilih satu je lagu.

Some colleges are well known in some aspects (K10 misalnya, rugby, KOSASS discipline). Combining them altogether is like mashing up many different ideals together, which in one hand is so caca marba like inviting both your liberal and conservative uncles to dinner, and on the other, might cause some ideals to succumb to the more dominant ones. K10 dengan K11 gabung takpe sebab deorang kolej lain jantina, and both are engineering colleges, they complement each other well. KOSASS dengan K2 gabung kan jadi pelik? KOSASS kolej askar kot.

Tapi paling penting is the nostalgia la kan especially for the alumni. We've known our alma mater for our whole life in university, now that our colleges are no more sebab kena gabung dengan kolej lain dan tukar nama, the college would only exist as buildings.

But that's just me being nostalgic I guess. But that's just how UPM was/is. Budaya kolej is stronger than budaya faculty (which is nonexistent actually). Dekat kolej lah banyak aktiviti, semua course mates duduk kolej yang sama, that in the end the bond only gotten stronger.

Tapi tulah, nak kolej aku wujud lama-lama sampai bila ye dok? Even as an alumnus (yasss alumnus is the singular noun, alumni is the plural) I never visited my college, because of ....reasons. So I have no say on how the colleges are managed. I think if the alumni association for each college is strong and present, the merging of colleges might never happen. Tapi alumni pun sendu je, siapa nak fight for the nostalgia ye dok?

So that's all peeps, don't mind the incoherence. I'm not bipolar, just too lazy to think in one language.

Till we meet again, doa-doakan saya rajin update blog mkay XOXO
