Being physically less than average, and mediocre at
everything else makes you feel like you will never fit in, except when you’re
around your squad who are mostly social recluse with capital L on their
forehead.
I hold no higher grounds above any of these people, it
seems. There were 10 of us. Razreen, the photographer whose vision is as sharp
as his looks, Amirul the model cum singer, Fairus the ustaz cum angler, Hakim
the negotiator, Afiq the cook, Hasyiemey, Amirul’s “twin”, the designated narrator
who was there to fill in the silence, Irsyad the strong silent type, Asyraf the
artistic one, Naja, (well, Naja), and finally me. They all seemed frigging
talented and artistic in their own unique ways.
For starter, me and Naja listen to Lana’s 13 Beaches on the
beach, a somber take on a supposedly happy, sunny subject. Asyraf with his Zona
Nyaman song, a hippie, laid-back tune fitting to be a theme song to a weed-doing
group of people on an island. Difference in tastes in song is a stark reminder
that we are all exist in a spectrum. The only similarity that was holding us
together was perhaps we were all single, unmarried bachelors.
Phone clasped firmly in their hands, these people captured
every waking moment like it was the last. Me being me, I just love to take in
the scenery and bask in the atmosphere (read: too lazy to do anything) while
these guys always found new angles, views, poses and actions to capture. After an
action-packed morning at the jetty, watching sun rises from the east, I went
back to the chalet and took a nap.
There was no rushing in the island, almost as if working responsibilities
and adult worries are distant concepts not applicable to this time-space
continuum. The wind breeze from the sea feels like a blanket protecting us from
discomfort, both in the real life and the current life on the island.
When they weren’t capturing the scenes, they would sit
silently still with phones in their hand, with smiles etched on their faces, editing
videos, reviewing the pictures and be amazed by the shots. There was no two way
of seeing it – this island is pure bliss, period.
